Is the WWE working on a CM Punk vs "Stone Cold" dream match? Now that Punk has returned to the WWE, fans are already salivating at the chance of seeing major matches such as Punk vs Seth Rollins or Punk vs Roman Reigns. However, a new report suggests they could get something even bigger.

Fightful Select is reporting behind its Patreon paywall that some WWE officials are lobbying for a Punk vs Austin match. It should go without saying that this would be a dream match as it would feature one of the defining stars from the Attitude Era facing one of the defining stars from the Ruthless Aggression Era.

As of now, we’re told many in WWE are hopeful and even optimistic that the match could finally be put together. One source in the company had indicated that many ideas have already been floated between CM Punk and WWE. We have not heard how far along in talks, planning or pitches that this is, but that if all went well, the ideal scenario would see Punk flying to Austin to go over ideas. One source indicated that while that is the “ideal scenario,” there’s a lot to get through first. Those close to Austin say that they’ve never heard him mention any personal issues that the two would need to get over, and actually indicated that they drop messages to each other a couple of times a year or so.

An Ideal WrestleMania Match

Right now it seems as if the WWE has so many potential opponents for Punk that it doesn't know where to start. Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso has already reported that the WWE wants to have Punk work with Roman Reigns but that it first plans to have Punk wrestle Seth Rollins. However, when would any Punk vs Rollins match take place? The Royal Rumble? Elimination Chamber? WrestleMania 40 or all three? 

Likewise, the WWE could run Punk vs Roman Reigns at WrestleMania but if it does, what happens with the long-rumored Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns rematch at the upcoming "Showcase of the Immortals" in Philadelphia? 

If Not, WrestleMania, When?

On paper, there's no reason to believe a Punk vs Austin match can't happen. "Stone Cold" Steven Austin more than showed he's capable of working a ten-minute-plus match when he battled Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 39. However, Austin would need time to get into ring shape. He'd also have to work around his schedule which includes his various business enterprises and TV appearances. Austin isn't going to be rushed into anything just because the WWE smells a huge box office.

Fortunately, the increase in the number of stadium shows and shows at international venues means that the WWE has many choices for booking a match this big besides WrestleMania. As a matter of fact, the WWE may already have so many big matches planned for 'Mania that it might want to save this for another show such as SummerSlam or one of its Saudi Arabia events (however, as WrestleLamia has pointed out, it's unknown if Punk will work in Saudi Arabia).
