Leaving Dynasty as the Undisputed AEW World Trios Champions were…
The Bang Bang Gang have merged the AEW World Trios and ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championships, doing so by besting The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn on the Zero Hour pre-show ahead of AEW Dynasty.
Although the match was instantly marred by a derogatory pre-match comment uttered by Max Caster - who, in Dave Meltzer’s words, “may get in trouble” - the trios match played out in front of a somewhat divided crowd, showing their approval for both groups, concluding when Jay White pinned Billy Gunn following a Bladerunner; thus, Gunn, Caster, and Anthony Bowens’ 238-day reign as AEW World Trios Champions is history.
Tony Khan confirmed ahead of Dynasty that the titles vs. titles affair would indeed be a direct unification of the AEW and ROH championships, confirming that the decision would allow for greater opportunities for trios in both promotions (H/T Figure Four Online):
"The winner of the match will be the Undisputed World Trios Champions. I think that's very cool and it'll create a lot of great opportunities for the top trios out there. I think it's very exciting, you know, some consolidation and unification of championships."
The AEW World Trios Championships were inaugurated in the summer of 2022, being blemished with controversy from the off when the first champions, The Elite, were suspended the night of their title win for their involvement in the infamous Brawl Out incident. The ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championships, meanwhile, have been around since 2016, with the second incarnation of The Kingdom - Matt Taven, TK O’Ryan, and Vinny Marseglia - being the inaugural champions.
Discussion of All Elite Wrestling debuting Trios Championships had been a hot topic of discourse since the company’s founding year, yet they weren’t formally introduced until Dynamite’s July 27, 2022 broadcast. A tournament to crown champions concluded mere weeks later, as Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks bested ‘Hangman’ Adam Page, John Silver, and Alex Reynolds to lift the titles.
Five reigns have followed The Elite, including a second reign for the trio of AEW EVPs. In order, Death Triangle’s PAC and The Lucha Bros, The House of Black’s Malakai Black, Brody King, and Buddy Matthews, The Acclaimed, and now The Bang Bang Gang have held the championships. As of publication, The Acclaimed’s reign is the longest, ending at 238 days.
