Can Promotion Deliver?

TNA Wrestling President Scott D'Amore promises big things in 2024 but can he and the rest of the company deliver? IMPACT Wrestling recently announced that it will revert to its original name TNA Wrestling in 2024. However, there's much more coming than a name change.

TNA's Impact on Wrestling

IMPACT, which has been around since 2002 has seen many changes since its inception. Along the way, it's offered fans an alternative to the WWE and given younger talent a chance to hone their skills alongside veterans, creating some of the top names in the industry today, chief among them AJ Styles. The company also reminded fans of the importance of tag team wrestling with its robust tag division. In addition, TNA's Knockouts gave fans of women's wrestling something to watch besides Bra and Panties Matches and Playboy Pillow Fights.

However, TNA has had its lows as well as its highs. The promotion's decision to revive the Monday Night War by moving its flagship show to compete directly with RAW was a major blunder. The idea to bring in Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, and a variety of former WWE and WCW wrestlers also turned off some of TNA's fanbase. Regardless, TNA has shown resiliency in staying afloat in an industry overshadowed by the WWE.

D'Amore recently talked with Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso about the changes coming for IMPACT Wrestling besides the name change. D'Amore revealed that he wanted to change IMPACT back to TNA Wrestling when he first came on board in 2018. However, he knew it was too soon to confuse fans with a brand change.

With TNA coming soon, what should fans expect? D'Amore told Barrasso:

“You’re going to see upgrades to our look and pacing. We’re in a position to inspire the next generation. Will Ospreay mentioned to me he grew up a TNA Wrestling kid, and that TNA holds a special place in his heart."

Whether or not Ospreay signs with TNA will have to wait. However, D'Amore said the company would love to have him. Scott (who originally worked in TNA as the manager of the heel faction Team Canada) said the promotion is also open to the idea of bringing in veterans with something to offer such as CM Punk.

D'Amore ruled out a return of TNA's six-sided ring, explaining that too many wrestlers have complained about it being tougher on their bodies. While the six-sided ring won't be back, it sounds like D'Amore has plenty he's excited about for 2024:

“Expect consistency. Expect depth in our storytelling, which we’re as good as–if not better than–anybody else. If you’re on our show, you earned a spot on our show. It’s not only Josh Alexander, Jordynne Grace, Masha Slamovich, and Steve Maclin that have storylines. Johnny Swinger and Crazzy Steve do, too. That’s one of our strengths, and we’ll continue to forge forward with that.”

2024 will be here soon. If TNA Wrestling delivers, it could rise the wave of popularity generated by the WWE. If not, it could get lost in the crowd as more promotions are showing up on weekly TV. What do you think of TNA's chances in 2024?
