What Did Rey Say About Fellow LWO Teammate?
Rey Mysterio isn't holding back on his praise of fellow Latino World Order (LWO) teammate Dragon Lee. "The Master of the 6-1-9" recently appeared on the Bakers Banerting podcast and was downright delighted with Dragon Lee's work in the WWE so far.
“I see a lot of a young me in Dragon Lee. He is very unique with his style. Of course, he carries a tradition of lucha libre, which is the mask. The mask represents something way beyond just putting on a mask. It transforms you. It gives you a certain power of representation to our culture, representation to our sport. Overall, he has the heart and determination to go in the ring and put it all on the line. I’ve seen that every time he steps in the ring.”
Dragon Lee has also made quite the impression on the WWE Universe since he debuted in NXT in 2023. Lee, who had the opportunity to work in All Elite Wrestling, chose the WWE. Although Lee began on the black-and-gold brand, it was obvious early on that he was getting a strong push. Lee dazzled fans at 1 April's NXT: Stand and Deliver event, then was thrust into a white-hot feud with The Judgment Day's Dominik Mysterio. The two battled over the North American Championship, with Lee eventually capturing the belt.
Since then, Dragon Lee has joined the Latino World Order, aiding the group in their feud against former LWO member Santos Escobar. Although Dragon Lee has come up short against Escobar, the 28-year-old has shown why he's considered such a rising star. Rey Mysterio praised Dragon Lee further during his podcast appearance:
“I endorse, myself, Dragon Lee to be the next superstar within WWE that’s a luchador. It’s been quite awhile. We’ve had several luchadors in WWE that have been given opportunities, but Dragon Lee is captivating and taking full advantage of this opportunity. He already beat Dominik for the North American Title. You can already see he’s going very big.”
H/TÂ Inside the Ropes
The WWEÂ has tried to find a luchador to match Rey Mysterio's success. The WWEÂ has had plenty of masked luchadors on its roster, including Sin Cara (both versions), Gran Metalik, Lince Dorado, and Kalisto. Unfortunately, no one has come close to matching Rey's success.
Part of the problem may be the WWE's reluctance to book smaller wrestlers competitively against bigger wrestlers. Rey Mysterio was able to elude this booking problem as he was often portrayed as the WWE's resident giant killer. However, subsequent masked luchadors haven't been portrayed this strongly, which makes it difficult for fans to get behind them as much as they did for Rey.
The WWE needs to be careful with how it pushes Dragon Lee, as it shouldn't risk pushing him so hard that fans turn on him. The WWE should also avoid comparing Dragon Lee to Rey Mysterio because there is and only will be one Rey Mysterio.
Nevertheless, Dragon Lee is off to a terrific start, and Rey's support likely means a lot to the young star. Do you think Dragon Lee has a bright future in the WWE?Â
