On this day in 2007, the TNA World Championship was born.

Inaugurated at that year’s Sacrifice pay-per-view alongside the TNA World Tag Team Championships, the title replaced the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship as the primary championship in the then-Dixie Carter-fronted organisation, owing to the group’s departure from the overarching National Wrestling Alliance.

Although it has gone through a menagerie of designs, names, and eras, the championship’s purpose has remained the same; to be a workhorse World Championship in an era where other World Championships are there to sports entertain. This has been at the forefront of each champion’s mantra while reigning as champion, beginning with Kurt Angle and continuing today with Moose.
