A few days ago, it was reported that there was belief within WWE that Austin vs. Punk could finally happen, now that Punk was back in WWE.

However, Dave Meltzer has since discussed the report on Wrestling Observer Radio, and Meltzer claims that Austin hasn’t been approached for the match:

“As soon as that story came out, I heard from a bunch of people who were pretty close in, and they basically said, ‘Probably shouldn't be doing that one or worrying about that one.’ Basically, it's not anything that anyone's talked about to any degree. I mean, it could happen, and it makes sense.”

“As of right now, he hasn't been approached. He's not in. I'm not saying he won't be and that is not their direction. I'm not saying that's like some people thought the same thing you did. ‘Hey, maybe we could do it’…..I would just say it's premature. I wouldn't say it's never going to happen [either]”

It was widely reported earlier this year that Austin turned down featured matches with both Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Either Austin vs. Lesnar or Austin vs. Reigns was going to take place at WrestleMania 39; however, due to Austin turning the matches down, WWE went in a completely different direction.

Austin previously wrestled at WrestleMania 38, in an acclaimed main event matchup against Kevin Owens. Austin hasn’t completely ruled out a return to the ring, yet his match with Owens seemed like the perfect send-off for one of WWE’s all-time greats.

Austin vs. Punk would deliver huge business for WWE, and there is established history between the two, as the two had an infamous segment on RAW back in 2011, and both were a part of the universally praised WWE 2K13 promotional video, which saw both men cut scathing promos on each other.
