New Report Suggests Match Hasn't Been Signed
Is The Rock vs Roman Reigns still uncertain? The match seems like a done deal for some members of the WWE Universe but a new report from Dave Meltzer suggests otherwise. In addition, there's also talk that if the match happens, the WWE may hold it at one of its Saudi Arabia shows. Let's look at the latest and see what it could mean for WrestleMania 40.
Meltzer weighed in on the situation during a recent Wrestling Observer Radio:
“As far as WrestleMania goes, he has not signed as of today; as far as I know. He was on First Take, and he certainly strongly hinted at it. It is absolutely in play. It is not a done deal. He wants to do WrestleMania this year. There are forces that are interested in how much value he could bring to Saudi Arabia. But he would rather do WrestleMania as it stands now. So it depends. I think there's balls in play. Nothing is 100%. And there's people who would like to convince him they can make tons of extra money from Saudi Arabia to do it. So we don't know the answers, this is all in the process of being worked out right now. But he is absolutely looking doing the match with Roman Reigns. He's absolutely looking at doing it at WrestleMania. It's not signed.”

Meltzer raises an intriguing scenario: that of The Rock skipping WrestleMania so he can work at Saudi Arabia and potentially make more money. While it's unknown how the WWE handles Saudi paydays after its merger with Endeavor, the Saudi Arabia shows have traditionally paid big bucks for special guests. If that's still the case, it's difficult to imagine a bigger special guest than The Rock.
It's also possible The Rock could work WrestleMania and a Saudi Arabia show. Right now, it's unknown whether The Rock has any film projects ahead. If so, this would keep him from wrestling. If not, he may decide to do as John Cena did last year during the Screen Actors Guild strike and work multiple matches. However, The Rock may be cautious to do so as he doesn't want to get injured as John Cena reportedly was after working a handful of matches in 2023.
The Rock Talks Up How Big A Match Against Roman Reigns Would Be
During his appearance on ESPN's First Take, The Rock discussed the magnitude of a 'Mania match between himself and his cousin:
“If myself and Roman Reigns were to main event WrestleMania, and I mean this very respectfully of all the WrestleMania's prior, because I grew up in this business and I love it, we could possibly put on, with us as the main event and this incredible group of men and women who are these incredible performers, we could possibly put on the greatest and the biggest WrestleMania of all time. There’s a chance… I love this business, I love pro wrestling, I love WWE. I also have a deep passion to grow it and to build it. And if we’re going to do something like this, I want the world to watch.”

The Rock's experience in the WWE, Hollywood, and his other business endeavors means fans should expect "The People's Champion" to hype anything he is involved with. Whether or not a Rock vs Roman match delivers in the ring isn't even a question. After all, Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant at WrestleMania 3 was anything but a mat classic, but the hype made it the biggest match in WWF history for years.
There are many possibilities for The Rock. While the WWE wants him to wrestle, he could serve as a special referee or ring enforcer. The Rock's new status as a board member for TKO-Holdings could lead to him opting for something besides wrestling. If The Rock does wrestle, fans will be eager to see if the WWE acknowledges his status on the board and incorporates it into a storyline. It
Naturally, The Rock is in the driver's seat when it comes to deciding what's best for him. Although he likely doesn't need the money (especially after scoring more cash by joining the TKO board), he's a business-minded person and will choose what's best for his bank account and his physical health. As much as The Rock may want to entertain the fans with one last match, he knows an injury could put his many other endeavors on hold.
One thing is certain, if the WWE and The Rock agree on making the match happen, fans won't know until the WWE decides the time is right. For now, we'll have to wait and see how things play out.
Do you think The Rock vs Roman will happen and if so, will it be at WrestleMania 40?
