Could WWE Universe See "Ultimate Challenge 2024?"
Is Gunther looking to recreate WrestleMania VI with Seth Rollins? The current Intercontinental Champion recently spoke with Busted Open Radio about his goal of challenging World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40. Here's what "The Ring General" had to say:
“I always thought that scenario would be interesting with me and Seth in there, The Intercontinental Champion versus the World Heavyweight Champion. Actually, in that scenario it all works out how I would like it: I would be the only one able to walk out with both titles.”
This scenario is reminiscent of WrestleMania 6's "The Ultimate Challenge" where Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior squared off against WWF Champion Hulk Hogan. However, it's safe to say Gunther doesn't see himself as a modern-day version of The Ultimate Warrior; at least based on these remarks he made about The Ultimate Warrior's legacy during an appearance on The Bump:
Those are the real dark ages. He’s [The Ultimate Warrior] a showman. He’s not an athlete, not a professional wrestler, he’s a showman. Now, everybody knows why I have to be the one to keep this title for the longest time in history to wash its reputation clean and set it to a new standard.

The current Intercontinental Champion discussed whether the battle of the champions could take place at this year's "Show of Shows":
“But yeah, speculation is a great thing, I think,” said the Intercontinental Champion. “Unpredictable this year, it is what makes this business exciting; nobody knows where it’s going.”
H/TÂ Ringside News
As WrestleLamia commented about earlier, a new report suggests the WWEÂ will make some significant shake-ups to WrestleMania 40's card due to recent injuries and out-of-the-ring activities.
WrestleLamia recently discussed that it's time to take the I-C Title off Gunther, but having him defeat Seth would pose a problem. Gunther is ready for a world title run, but what of the Intercontinental Championship?
How will the WWE handle the Intercontinental Championship If Gunther defeats Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40? It's unlikely the WWE would merge the two titles because that would defeat the purpose of Gunther rebuilding the belt's prestige. Would the WWE take the belt off Gunther, much as it did after WrestleMania 6 when The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan?Â
There's nothing wrong with Gunther winning the World Heavyweight Championship. However, if he is forced to vacate the I-C strap, the WWE will miss out on a huge opportunity to give the rub to whoever beats Gunther for the title.
It's a question the WWE will have to answer if it books "The Ring General" vs "The Visionary" at 'Mania. For now, fans will have to wait and see if Cody Rhodes challenges Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns. What would you like to see happen? If Gunther does challenge Seth at WrestleMania, how should the WWE handle the Intercontinental Championship?
