Is Brock Lesnar vs Gunther finally happening? Fans have been salivating at the prospect of this dream match but the closest the WWE Universe has come to seeing it happen was the two titans' brief skirmish at the 2023 Royal Rumble.

Dave Meltzer recently discussed the prospect of Gunther vs Brock Lesnar happening. Meltzer mused on a recent Wrestling Observer Radio that it's unlikely Gunther will win The Royal Rumble. Thus, Meltzer noted:

“I was thinking about [Lesnar vs GUNTHER]. I don’t know that, but I was thinking about that. Cody’s not in the match unless they’re gonna do a 3-way, but they’ve already done Cody and Brock, they’re not gonna do that again.”

A Long Time Coming

Rumors about a Gunther vs Brock Lesnar match have circulated ever since "The Ring General" hit the main roster. Gunther's incredible reign as NXT UK Champion made quite the impression on the WWE Universe. When he was called up to SmackDown, fans immediately began speculating on who would win in a match between these two colossuses.

It didn't take Gunther long to win the Intercontinental Championship once he hit the main roster and by September 2022, there was already a buzz about the two locking up sooner rather than later.

Gunther discussed the potential match during an interview with Gorilla Position before Gunther defended his title at Clash at the Castle:

“It would be great. I think he’s a fantastic wrestler and I hope to get in the ring with him."

In November 2022, Gunther discussed who he saw as his biggest challenge in the WWE, telling WMBD News:

“If I had to pin it down to one name, I’d say it’s Brock Lesnar at the moment. When I was young and watching WWE, I enjoyed watching his matches. Later on when I progressed in my career, I was able to watch wrestling and analyze how people work. He’s always been somebody I was impressed with. He’s one of the best to ever do it. I think that’s the biggest possible challenge for me at the moment.”

These interviews and other discussions of Gunther vs Brock had more than a few thinks suspecting the WWE was setting things up for a Gunther vs Lesnar match at WrestleMania 39. When Gunther and Brock met during the 2023 Royal Rumble, you could hear the proverbial pin drop. Then both men briefly battled only for things to shift from Gunther vs Brock to Bobby Lashley vs Brock. It eventually became clear that the WWE was going in a different direction; Bobby Lashley vs Brock Lesnar at Elimination Chamber.

Gunther ended up defending his Intercontinental Championship against Drew McIntyre and Sheamus at WrestleMania in a Triple Threat Match while Brock Lesnar battled Omos. In hindsight, it's understandable that the WWE didn't want to book Gunther vs Brock yet as it still wanted to build Gunther up and the WWE may already have had plans for Brock vs Cody after WrestleMania 39.

Is WWE Ready for a Real-Life Clash of the Titans?

The WWE could be ready to make the match happen, and it's difficult to imagine a better time. Gunther is beginning to peak as Intercontinental Champion, and he needs a new challenge after demolishing so many different opponents on SmackDown and RAW. Some fans think "The Ring General's" days as Intercontinental Champion are numbered and that the WWE is finally preparing to move him into the world title picture or a top feud in the main event. What could be bigger for Gunther than a feud with Brock Lesnar (WrestleLamia would mention Roman Reigns, but why waste Gunther's star power by having him be Roman's latest victim?).

The time for Gunther vs Brock Lesnar is now. The WWE can get things rolling at The Royal Rumble by having the two Superstars confront each other and then light the fuse for their match at WrestleMania. It's difficult to think of either man having better opponents for "The Showcase of the Immortals."
