Does the former WWE Champion need to fight 'The Tribal Chief'?
The most buzzed-about match that has yet to happen is The Rock vs. Roman Reigns. This match has been building up since “The Great One” made his brief return to the company for his feud against John Cena. While not perfect, it was a once-in-a-generation match that pitted WWE’s best stars of today and tomorrow.Â
Since then, The Rock has gone on to Hollywood to become a bigger star. Meanwhile, Reigns is the biggest star of the modern generation. Roman Reigns’ rise to the top was a rocky (punt intended) one. But once he finally turned heel, the WWE Universal Champion found his groove as a character and his story with the Bloodline is easily one of the best arcs that the company has written.Â
Roman Reigns is at the peak of his career. The Rock is at the tail end of his (at least wrestling-wise). There are only so many matches that the former WWE Champion can have because father time remains undefeated. It does appear that the Bloodline saga is coming close to reaching its climax. With Roman Reigns going past his prime in terms of the Bloodline and The Rock not in the wrestling shape that he once was, is the match between the two icons still necessary?

The Dream Match Would Likely Not Turn Out The Way Fans Want It To
In terms of story, this could turn out to be one of the best stories ever written. The Rock vs. Roman Reigns sells itself. It’s a dream match because of the ties between both men. Plus, the new school vs. old school matches are classic stories that create a special type of magic for both fans and the business. Who could forget The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan?
It was such a huge match because of the incredible legacy of Hogan. Him facing one of the top names in professional wrestling at that top gave this match a buzz that has yet to be rivaled since. The match itself is solid, but the atmosphere surrounding it is why Hulk vs. Rock is so memorable.Â
The Rock vs. Roman Reigns has a chance to match that amazing atmosphere. Though Reigns is a heel, the character work of “The Tribal Chief” has been stellar. Sure, there’s been a couple of misses since his championship run began in 2020, but it’ll still go down as one of the best title runs in the company. The Rock is always magic anytime he returns to WWE. His charisma is unmatched and he feels special, especially when a mic is in his hand. But, The Rock isn’t the same guy that had classics with Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mankind. His run in 2013/2014 produced solid matches, but you can tell that some ring rust and aging got the better of his body. Roman Reigns can carry Rock to a solid match. But it definitely won’t be the all-time classic that it could’ve been if The Rock was 20 years younger.

The Reigns Vs. Rock Story Is Half-Way Written
That said, the story of their rivalry is already written. We’ve already seen Jey try and fail to knock Reigns off his throne. The Rock stepping in and trying to accomplish that goal feels natural. This doesn’t mean that The Rock should be the next challenger for the WWE Undisputed Universal title. In fact, this is a Rock and Hogan situation where these two don’t need the belts for the match to be special.Â
Though there hasn’t been much on-screen banter between Reigns and Rock, there are likely photos and videos of the two interacting at simple family events or even the Hobbs & Shaw set. WWE has done an excellent job of diving deep into these characters and giving them incredible depth and dimension. WWE has gotten a compelling story out of Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, and Jey Uso; if the company can develop a strong story from the ground up with these men, then it would be shocking if the rivalry between Rock and Reigns doesn’t live up to the hype.Â
These two will surely bring their A-game. Plus, there are so many ways that this feud can pop off. Rock vs. Reigns has the ability to be one of the greatest feuds of all time because Triple H’s creative has proven that they’re capable of telling such amazing stories of that nature.Â
The Rock feels like the final boss before the whole Bloodline saga ends. The important themes of the faction are family and loyalty. The Rock vs. Roman Reigns SHOULD happen, but it does depend on when. Roman Reigns is an established name, so he doesn’t necessarily need the big win. However, The Rock should NOT be the man to beat Roman for the WWE Undisputed Universal title. That belt needs to go to somebody who’s the present and future of this company. The bout should happen after Roman drops the belt. You can still tell a compelling story regarding the themes of the Bloodline without the titles involved.Â
